Victory for Rockport's Coastal Heritage
This summer, the Massachusetts Land Court reaffirmed what generations of Rockport residents have long believed: the Atlantic Path belongs to the public.
The court upheld an 1887 deed restriction that guarantees public access through a section of Andrews Point, preserving a 135-year tradition of walking the coastline. The decision protects the public's right to continue enjoying one of Rockport's most scenic and historic shoreline paths, ensuring future visitors can experience the same breathtaking views that have inspired walkers for generations.

A Community Tradition
For the past six years, a dedicated Sunday morning walking group has gathered every week to walk the path together, helping keep this beloved tradition alive. Following the court's decision, the group celebrated the victory with a community walk from the entrance behind The Emerson Inn, honoring both the legal victory and the generations of people who have cared for this special place.
The path has also become even more enjoyable in recent years thanks to the work of Rockport's Right of Way Committee, which helped reconnect portions of the trail, allowing walkers to continue farther toward Halibut Point State Park.
