From the galleries along Bearskin Neck to the historic halls of the Rockport Art Association & Museum, to the Paper House, creativity has shaped this seaside town and its visitors and commmunity for generations.
A Living Partnership with Rockport’s Art Community
At The Emerson Inn in Rockport, Massachusetts, we believe a stay by the ocean should offer more than beautiful views — it should offer connection to the culture that defines Cape Ann.
Through our on-site programming we bring artists back to Pigeon Cove each month for live demonstrations, exhibitions, and meaningful community gatherings.
Guests who stay with us experience more than a hotel — they experience Rockport’s vibrant art scene from the inside.

Rooted in History, Committed to Creativity
Rockport has long been a destination for painters drawn to its luminous skies, working harbor, and dramatic coastline. That artistic tradition continues today — and The Emerson Inn by the Sea is proud to help sustain it.
Our commitment includes:
· Hosting monthly live art demonstrations (free and open to the public)
-Promoting opportunities at the Cape Ann Museum to discover historically important artists like Fitz Henry Lane,Homer, Hopper, Hancockand starting in June 2026, Avery, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea.
· Displaying and selling local and regional artwork across all four floors of the inn
· Treasuring some works made specially for the Inn over the last 60 years
· Donating guest rooms for artists and judges during major competitions enjoying having an artist in residence
· Sponsoring and hosting dinners and art receptions
· Showcasing special exhibitions, including a celebration of the late Paul Strisik’s acrylic and oil paintings
In a tight-knit community that values artistic expression, we believe hospitality and creativity naturally belong together.
The Heart of the Experience: Monthly Art Demonstrations

Each month, artists demonstrate their craft live at the inn — sometimes on the porch overlooking the Atlantic, sometimes inside depending on the medium.
These gatherings are:
· Free and open to the public
· Intimate (typically 10–20 attendees)
· Informative and interactive
· Designed to welcome both the local community and interested visitors
Guests frequently describe these evenings as unexpected highlights of their stay.
One recent favorite was Rosalie Sidoti’s lively and personable demonstration — her engaging style and informative approach drew strong attendance and enthusiastic conversation.
Across the inn, works by artists including John Caggiano, Rosalie Sidoti, Joe Smith, Bill Lane, and Jonathan McWilliams are displayed and available for purchase — commission-free.
For travelers seeking things to do in Rockport, MA beyond the beach, these experiences offer a meaningful way to engage with Cape Ann’s creative culture.
Celebrating Light: The Emerson Dusk to Dawn Award

The Emerson Inn is also proud sponsor of the annual Emerson Dusk to Dawn Award, a national prize recognizing exceptional work in sunrise, sunset, or nocturne painting.
The theme reflects what makes this place extraordinary:
- Spectacular Atlantic sunrises visible from our ocean-facing rooms
- The glow of moonlight celebrated during our monthly Moonrise Parties
- The ever-changing coastal light that defines Rockport
The award is juried — in 2025 by acclaimed artist Cindy Baron.
This year’s recipient, Harley Bartlett, earned the honor for Beach Road, a crowd favorite at the awards reception attended by our staff and community members alike.
Through this award, we honor not only artistic excellence, but the light that has drawn painters to Cape Ann for over a century.
